Reduction
Presentation of the intervention
Breast reduction (or reduction mammaplasty) is the procedure which reduces the volume of the breasts. Women suffering from breast enlargement may also have surgery to correct the sagging of their breasts.
Breast enlargement surgery allows women to regain a better proportioned and more elegant silhouette, by reducing and often raising the breasts in the same surgical procedure.
Explanation
Main indications for breast reduction
Breasts that are too large can cause discomfort, and sometimes even functional discomfort leading to back pain. Aesthetically, the weight of the breasts will often reduce the elasticity of the skin, create stretch marks and generate ptosis of the chest.
Like any breast surgery, breast reduction can be performed at the end of puberty and after breast growth has stabilized.
Explanation
Consultation for breast reduction
The first consultation is important because it will allow you to express your expectations taking into account your body shape while asking all the practical questions related to the intervention so that a dialogue of trust can be established between us.
During this consultation, I will examine you and present the different surgical solutions best suited to your case and your request, in particular the technique used.
I will also show you photos before / after the intervention close to your case to visualize concrete examples.
I will give you an information sheet and a personalized quote. A legal period of 15 days of reflection must be observed before making your decision for the intervention.
Explanation
Before the intervention
As with any chest surgery, preoperative examinations should be carried out: an ultrasound or mammogram as well as a blood test for general anesthesia.
The anesthesiologist will see you for a consultation at least 48 hours before the operation.
A prescription will be given to you for the purchase of a specific post-operative support bra.
As with any surgical procedure, the following recommendations must be strictly followed:
- Do not take aspirin-based medications or anti-inflammatories 10 days before.
- Fasting for 6 hours before the operation.
- Stop smoking one month before the procedure to promote healing.
Explanation
Breast reduction procedure
The procedure lasts approximately 2 hours under general anesthesia. It reduces the volume of the chest while correcting any sagging. The chest is lifted, it is more harmonious and retains its natural appearance.
Depending on the case, different approaches are possible. If breast reduction is accompanied by a “breast lift” to correct breast ptosis, the cost of scarring is often greater (than for breast augmentations for example) with vertical scars under the areola and at the horizontal in the inframammary fold (called an inverted “T” scar).
If it is a simple reductionplasty, another approach with a single incision around the areola is possible.
Generally, you stay one night in the clinic. A same-day exit is possible in certain cases. After the procedure, a compressive dressing is made and the support bra is put in place.
The sutures are made with absorbable thread placed in the thickness of the skin (intradermal suture).
Explanation
After breast reduction surgery
Breast reduction is generally a relatively painless procedure. Any post-operative pain is calmed with analgesics. They subside within a few days.
After a week you come and see me again in post-operative consultation and I will remove your dressing. Another lighter dressing is applied. It will need to be changed every week and does not prevent you from taking a shower. The support bra must be kept on for a month, even at night.
Most often, a one-week work stoppage must be planned.
Check-up visits to my office are scheduled at 15 days, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and one year.
Some recommendations should be followed, such as avoiding significant physical exertion for a few weeks. You can resume sporting activity one month after the procedure while wearing the compression bra.
Any exposure to the sun should be avoided before 2 months and you should protect yourself with a maximum sunscreen.
Breastfeeding remains possible after a reduction mammaplasty. It is recommended to observe a period of at least 6 months before any pregnancy.
Explanation
The result
The result of the breast reduction procedure is visible immediately. The chest then has a harmonious, symmetrical and natural curve.
The result can be definitively appreciated after the softening of the tissues after 1 to 3 months. It is completely stable over the long term although it may vary in the event of a significant change in weight. The scars are closely monitored and will only present a definitive appearance after a full year.
The benefit of the intervention is felt immediately if there was functional discomfort and back pain.
Explanation
Cost of a breast reduction procedure
The cost of the intervention depends on each case and the intervention that will result from it as well as hospitalization costs.
In certain cases, the intervention may be covered by social security, particularly if there is functional discomfort and if the volume of the breasts to be reduced is at least 300 grams per breast (QEMA013).
Explanation
Risks and complications
Complications from breast enlargement surgery are rare. It concerns the risks associated with any surgical intervention (infection, necrosis, etc.).
Swelling and bruising are common and are the usual consequences of the procedure which will disappear within a few days.
The most classic risks are linked to delays in healing and alteration of the sensitivity of the operated area which is always reversible over time.
