Type of anesthesia

Lipofilling is usually performed under deep local anesthesia. Simple local anesthesia or even general anesthesia can also be used.

The choice between these different techniques will be the result of a discussion between you, the surgeon and the anesthetist.

This surgery is most often performed on an outpatient basis: admission, lipofilling and discharge are done on the same day.

Principle of Lipofilling

We begin by precisely identifying the areas where the fat will be collected, as well as the reinjection sites. The collection, similar to the liposuction technique, is carried out atraumatically, using a very fine suction cannula.

A one-minute centrifugation is then carried out to separate the intact fat cells, which will be grafted, from the elements that cannot be grafted, such as seroma and blood cells. The reinjection of the fat tissue is done through 1 mm incisions using micro-cannulas.

In this way, microparticles of fat are injected into different planes and in multiple and divergent directions. Since this is a real graft of living cells within the body, the survival of the adipocytes is therefore definitive.

The duration of the procedure depends on the quantity of fat to be reinjected and the number of locations to be treated. It can vary from 30 minutes to 2 hours in the case of isolated lipofilling.

The aftermath

In the postoperative period, pain is generally not very significant. Tissue swelling (edema) appears during the 48 hours following the procedure and will generally take 5 to 15 days to be completely absorbed. Bruises (black and blue) appear in the first hours at the areas of fat reinjection: they will disappear within 10 to 20 days after the procedure.

Thus, if physical recovery is usually rapid, it is advisable not to expose the operated areas to the sun or UV rays for at least 4 weeks, which would run the risk of permanent pigmentation.

The result is appreciated within 3 to 6 months after the procedure. It is most often satisfactory, whenever the indication and technique have been correct: the depressions are generally filled and the volumes restored.
